Labor for Rest or for IndependenceBy BlindEagleblindeagle@codeysworld.comCopyright © 2009 by BlindEagle. All rights reserved. |
Today we rest; we’ve worked hard for countless days, months, and years, so we deserve a day of rest. Many see Labor Day as a time to regroup from a summer of fun, from camping to visiting family and friends who we hold close and love from afar.
So why Labor Day? Well, this day, though separated as a day to be free and rest, would never be possible without its predecessor: Independence Day. How soon we forget! Look back just a month and a few weeks ago and remember how you spent Independence Day, then look at today and ask yourself: a year from now, where will I be? Working hard just to celebrate another Labor Day? Or will I follow the spirit of Independence Day and be free.
Independence Day!
It’s been over two hundred and thirty years since America declared its independence as a nation. Today parks across the nation will acquire the smell of various foods. Adults will relax in the shade if the weather permits, while their young run to the nearest body of water to play games with friends, siblings and cousins and try to stay cool.
The day goes on as expected as millions of hard earned dollars are spent so children and adults can see the pleasure of beautiful lights for a quick moment in time – then it’s gone.
Now take a minute and close your eyes, sense the smell of grilled meats and its accompanying sidekicks, not to forget the cases upon cases of alcohol, beer and soft drinks, later as the day slowly turn to night, listen to the fireworks from far and near. Though you may not be able to see the beauty of lights on display, you know on the inside that fireworks are all around you and that they exist
Is Independence Day what it really is or not?
The proof of that is what you see in every park
It’s a day when families come together
Family, friends and neighbors all out seeking fun and pleasure
But hiding behind the rockets bursting in air
Remain issues of independence that are still unclear
A nation that fought for its freedom
Still hold many in its population as imprisoned victims
Land of the free home of the brave, maybe?
While the lives of many young and old are denied the right to be free
The pleasure for a day everyone pursues
Believing what they want instead of the truth
To see and not see because I chose to live life my way
Where are my rights to declare my Independence Day!
