It Will All Work Out Eventually

Chapter 2: Morning Stroll

The next morning felt like the first day of the rest of my life. I was starting fresh at a new school and I wanted everything to be perfect. I got out of bed and peeked out of my room into the hallway, looking down the hall to see if my parents had gotten up. The lights were still off in the hallway, so I registered that the coast was clear. I made my way to the stairs and headed down to the first floor of the house.

The first thing I noticed downstairs was that it was a lot colder than it was last night. It was, however, a good thing that I had gone on my exploration last night. I made my way over to my box of clothes and tried to pick up the box, but to no avail. It felt as if it weighed a ton and there was no possible way that I was going to carry it upstairs.

So I went with the next best option. I grabbed onto one of the shorter sides of the box and began to drag it across the floor, creating a loud scrapping noise as the cardboard slid over the wooden floor. I made my way to the steps and with a lot of effort, pulled the box up enough to get it on the edge of the first stair.

I kept my head down as I pulled the box up the stairs with all my might, taking a few short breaks here and there until I was only five stairs away from the top. After regaining my breath I lowered my head once again and tried to go up the remaining stairs. As my head began to clear the horizon, I noticed a pair of feet come into to view. I looked up to see my father smiling down at me.

"So that's what my little superhero has been doing this morning."

I quickly looked down and discovered that I still had on my Superman cape with my matching pair of underwear. A blush immediately stained my cheeks. My father laughed at my embarrassment as he reached over and grabbed the box I had brought upstairs. After placing the box full of my clothes under one of his arms, he scooped me up with his other and threw me over his shoulder.

"Hey! Put me down!"

My father only giggled at my request as he continued to my room. He pushed open the door and dropped the box on the floor before tossing me on my bed and attacking my stomach with his fingers. I laughed uncontrollably, wiggling and squirming under my father's touch in a desperate attempt to escape. As soon as he grabbed my hands and pinned them over my head with his arm, I knew I had zero chance to escape. I begged and pleaded for him to stop his assault for about two minutes before an idea came into my head.

"Dad... please stop... I gotta pee."

His fingers quickly left my stomach after the last word left my mouth and I quickly hopped off the bed. I ran out of my room and into the bathroom, with the door crashing against the wall. I made my way to the toilet and quickly pulled down my briefs before sighing in relief as I felt my bladder beginning to drain.

What... did you think I was faking when I said I had to pee?

I returned to my room when I finished and saw my father sitting on the bed. He looked up at me and patted the spot next to him, and I made my way over to him. I sat down beside my father, who smiled gingerly at me before sighing. These were the usual signs that he was about to give a speech. I simply groaned in response.

"Are you ready for your first day at your new school?"

I looked up towards my father, a little surprised about the topic, but I quickly pushed away my curiosity and answered his question.

"Yes. I’m really excited... but I’m still scared that no one is going to like me."

"That's the main reason I wanted to talk to you Luke. It isn't your fault that you weren't able to make any friends last year."

After hearing this, my curiosity instantly returned. If it wasn't my fault... then whose fault was it.

"It's not?"

"Of course not Luke. At first, your mom and I thought that you were just too shy to make friends. It wasn't until I went out to your school to actually see what was going on that I began to figure out something was a little... unique about you. That's why I suggested you go see Dr. Langston. When she told us that you had ADHD, we understood why you had some difficulty at school."

There was that word again. I remember Dr. Langston telling my parents that I had it, but I thought that it was just something normal. I didn't know that it was the reason everyone avoided me.

"What's ADHD?"

"Well... ADHD is a disease..."

I soon as I heard that word, fear took over all of my senses.

"I'm going to die!"

Considering the flinch I saw from my father, I knew he was shocked by my outburst.

"No. You're not going to die Luke. Having ADHD just makes you a lot more active or hyper than the other kids in your school."

"Will it go away?"

"No... but the doctor did give us a prescription for some medication you can take. It will help drain a little of your energy so you are not so hyper."

"Can I take it now?"

"Not yet, but I will give you some before I take you to school. Which reminds me, do you know that your school doesn't start for another three hours?"

I looked over at the clock and was a little confused.

"It's 5:26. Doesn't school start at 6:45?"

"Your school here will start at 8:30, so you have plenty of time to get ready. But, since you're up, do you wanna go explore the neighborhood?"

"Sure! Lets go!"

I hopped off the bed and was about to head for the door, but my father gently grabbed my shoulder and pulled me to a stop.

"I know you're a superhero Luke, but I think you might wanna change into some warmer clothing first."

I blushed for the second time that day at my father's superhero comment and earned another hearty laugh him in response.

"Why don't you go wash up first Luke. I'll get your clothes ready so we can go when you get out."

I simply nodded at my father's suggestion and made my way to the bathroom.

The cold wind nipped at my face as I walked down the concrete sidewalk with my father. As we walked, he told me about each house that we passed by. This went on for about twenty minutes until he finally pointed to a large one story house. The way he beamed when he saw the house led me to think that he knew something I didn't... but when I thought about it, that was pretty much the way it had been ever since we stepped outside. We turned up the walkway that led to the house and I immediately stopped as I felt a sudden rush of Déjà Vu run through my entire body.

"What's wrong Luke?"

I felt a strong hand grip my shoulder and looked up at my dad.

"I feel like I have seen this place before."

"You have. I pointed it out to you every time we looked in our family scrapbook."

Of course. That's where I’ve seen this house before. It all was starting to make sense now. My dad grabbed onto my hand again and we continued up the walkway until we we're both standing at the doorway. As soon as my dad knocked on the solid wood door, I could here footsteps coming towards the door. It opened a few seconds later and out stepped an older woman who looked as if she was in her late forties. Her eyes instantly connected with mine and her face lit up with joy.

"Luki!"

I had little time to react and before I knew it I was picked up and pulled into hug by a weirdly familiar complete stranger. Most kids would do anything in their power to get out of the situation I was currently in, but my mind was being clouded with emotions I had never felt in a while. Her gentleness and grace seemed to have me in a state of bliss and my body began to tingle all over. I didn't know what was happening with my body, all I knew was that I was enjoying every second of it. I laid my head against her shoulder feeling the warmth from her body against my cheeks as I breathed in her scent. My nose picked up the faint scent of strawberries in her hair and I sighed in pure happiness.

I had always longed for the love and attention from someone besides just Mom and Dad, and now that I actually began to feel it, it was really overwhelming for me. With no memory of physical contact with anyone other than my parents, I could feel all my pain beginning to flow out of me and exiting the only way it could. Through my eyes. When she heard me sniffling, she quickly pulled me away from her body and discovered that I had been crying. She smiled once again at me, slightly laughing as she continued to hold me out in outstretched arms.

"I guess this means you're happy to see your grandma."

Even though it was my first time meeting my grandmother, I did not want to break away from her loving embrace. I wrapped my arms around the back of her neck and pulled myself back into another hug, which she gladly accepted.
