The Face of Shadow

- In early pre-dawn hours,
- when awakened in a fright,
- by Shadow’s silent sounds,
- rustling in the night,
- there’s nothing there to fear
- nor anything to excite.
- It’s merely faceless Shadow,
- searching for the light.
-
- Softly, silently, swiftly,
- Shadow, nearly consumed by dark,
- searches through the nothingness,
- for the glimmer of a spark.
- Born the child of opposites,
- and searching for his place,
- accepted by neither parent,
- named by both a disgrace.
-
- Hidden in shame by parent dark
- and ignored by parent light,
- having no home in either world,
- and sorrowed by his plight,
- Shadow, seeking only acceptance
- and a place where he can belong,
- wanders through both worlds
- lost among the throng.
-
- Claimed by some to not exist
- and by others to be a fraud,
- labeled by many only confused
- but most agree he is flawed.
- Few realize he controls their destiny.
- In his hands he holds their fate.
- Still they loudly denounce him;
- is it envy or is it hate?
-
- Trapped between two equals
- and wounded in their fights,
- taking arrows from each,
- as they fight to protect their rights.
- Shadow hides among the masses,
- in numbers not explored,
- biding time and watching
- those by whom he’s abhorred.
-
- Shadow will someday realize,
- equal does not make a majority.
- Equal can just as easily be
- defined as a minority.
- Those fighting for their rights,
- should step back and thinkingly pause,
- be careful of who you call names,
- or Shadow might show his claws.
