I sat in the back of the class
Teachers acted as if I didn’t exist
Truth be told, they gave on up on me
Miss Williams said you will never learn
And I didn’t, not there anyway
From class to class, I’d drag my feet
’Cause my teachers gave up on me
If only once, had a teacher said
You can learn if you try
I will help you if you do
They all said, you will never learn
And I didn’t, not there anyway
I was twelve, too young to be told
You’re too dumb to learn anything
Miss Woods, down the hall,
Said I can’t learn at all
And I didn’t, not there anyway
Wasn’t long, I didn’t go to school at all
The streets became my classroom, then
My teachers here taught me well
Teachers were wrong, I could learn
It was here I began to see
Lessons of life can’t be taught in a school
I caught on quick, without any books
Teachers were wrong, I could learn
At first, they were kind and treated me well
What I do now is strange to me
Now, if I don’t do my lessons well
No one here gives up on me
They beat me up till I learn
Life is very hard on the streets
I think back and wish you had
Not told the class I was bad
Why didn’t you reach out to me
If you had, don’t you see,
I’d be in a class, using a pencil
Instead of here, using this needle
