Shocked

“Hey, why won’t you wait up?! I’ve been looking all over for you!” Kevin yelled.

“Leave me alone, I don’t want to talk to you.” Nick shouted back.

Kevin caught up to Nick, grabbed his shirt, and turned him around.

“I thought you would be someone who would accept me,” Kevin cried, eyes glistening with tears. “That’s why I’ve told you. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier, but I just couldn’t, I just wasn’t ready. Please understand?” he pleaded with a hurt voice.

“No, I don’t want to hang around fags! I can’t! I don’t want to know you anymore. You’re nothing to me anymore! Leave me the fuck alone!” Nick yelled and shoved Kevin back. “If you come near me again, I’ll kick your ass. Fucking faggot!” With that Nick turned and started to run.

“Why? Why?! I don’t understand. How could he? We were best friends, ever since we were little kids. How the fuck could he?” cried Kevin to his sister.

“Shhh, don’t worry. It’ll work out. He was shocked because he just found out that his best friend is gay.”

Janet tried her best to calm down her brother. She had known he was gay for over two years now, he didn’t have to tell her. She had always noticed her brother looked at other guys with longing eyes, and never looked at girls like that. When he told her three months ago, with fear in his eyes, she told him that he didn’t have to be scared, that she knew and it was okay. With that, she saw Kevin relax and reached out and hugged him. Kevin didn’t have the courage to tell their parents, He had just recently decided to tell Nick, his best friend.

“I didn’t think he’s say those awful things. I shouldn’t have told him.” Kevin sobbed against his sister’s shoulder. “I’ve lost my best friend.” Janet hugged him tighter. “Give him time, honey. It really will work out.”

Kevin visibly relaxed at that and asked, “You really think so? You’re not just saying that to make me feel better?”

“Of course not, I really think so.” She pushed him back a bit. “Don’t worry. Just give him some time to deal with the news.”

“Thanks, I feel better now.” He wiped his tears away on the sleeve of his shirt. “I love you, sis.”

“I love you too, honey. Don’t ever think I don’t.” She gave him a peck on the cheek. “Now, if you really do feel better, would you mind letting me get ready?” she laughed.

“Got another date with Ted, huh? Sure, I’ll go, but only if you promise you’ll fill me in when you get back,” Kevin joked.

“Sure, Kevin. And now, get out of my room. He’ll be here in ten minutes and I still haven’t decided what to wear.”

Kevin laughed at that and then left her room. ’Women…’ he thought while rolling his eyes.

It had been almost three weeks since Kevin’s ‘coming out’, and he had avoided Nick as much as he could to give him time to think. Kevin had been quiet for the majority of those three weeks and had grown a little habit of walking around looking at the ground. He didn’t want to look at anyone.

Kevin was walking home from school, looking down at the sidewalk, when he bumped into someone. He looked up and saw a very familiar face. Before he could say a word, Nick started talking.

“Kevin, I’m so sorry for how I reacted.”

“You hurt me pretty bad, Nick. But I understand. It must have been a shock.”

Kevin saw a look in the green eyes of his best friend. Nick looked uneasy, uncomfortable and apologetic.

“I hate myself for what I said to you. I didn’t mean it. I really didn’t. You are my best friend, you’ve always been and always will. But it really was a blow for me. I never saw it coming, that you are gay. I’m so sorry, buddy,” Nick said as tears flowed down his cheeks.

That was a shock for Kevin. He had never seen Nick cry before. He wanted to hug Nick to show him he was glad to have his best friend back. But he thought that would probably give the wrong message. He decided to just smile and said, “I’m happy to have you back as my best friend, Nick. It doesn’t matter anymore.”

Kevin turned and started to walk away. He wanted Nick to be much more than just a best friend, and didn’t want him to realize that and have their friendship end again, this time permanently.

Kevin didn’t realise that Nick was following him, and coming closer, until he felt two strong arms enveloping him. He looked around to see that Nick was holding him tight. He relaxed into the hug, turned and wrapped his own arms around Nick and squeezed hard, not wanting to ever let go.

When Kevin felt Nick relax his hug, he reluctantly relaxed his arms and looked into Nick’s eyes. What he saw there, gave him a queasy feeling in the pit of his stomach. He’d never seen that look in anyone’s eyes, he didn’t understand what it was, but it wasn’t a negative look. Before he knew it, Nick had pressed his lips onto his.

‘What...?! He’s kissing me!’

Nick felt Kevin’s confusion, and said softly, “Want to know why it was such a shock for me? Because it meant that maybe you could become my boyfriend, like I’ve wanted for such a very long time. I love you, Kevin.”

Nick kissed Kevin again and Kevin pulled him back into a hug. “I love you too, buddy.” He returned Nick’s kiss and realized that this was where he always had wanted to be, with Nick, in each other’s arms.
