Lament

a poem by codey

  1. Harsh words spoken in a moment of ire,
  2. causes great pain by one I admire,
  3. and words, once spoken, are hard to take back
  4. in less than an eyeblink, a friendship is cracked.
  5.
  6. The crack widens as more words are spewed.
  7. Hardened in anger, positions are skewed.
  8. A choice then is made as to whom to defend,
  9. a choice clearly showing who's prefered as a friend
  10.
  11. A coolness developes as we're drawn apart.
  12. Dark clouds build and fill my heart.
  13. I want to go back, somehow make amends
  14. but I'm at a loss just how to begin
  15.
  16. Should I ignore principle, or the way I was reared
  17. and betray the teachings of those I revere?
  18. Or should I stand firm, never waiver or bend,
  19. knowing full well what my actions portend.
  20.
  21. My heart is bleeding, as if cut by a sword.
  22. The hurt deepens and can't be ignored.
  23. There must be a way to bring to an end
  24. this pain that I feel from the loss of a friend.
